PRE-PRODUCTION • Broadcast Channel Credit Style | Development
Once we decided on BBC 1 being our broadcast channel, I did some research on the credit style for the channel. The BBC has some specific rules that must be abided by if they are to broadcast the show. Some of these rules include:
- The text must be justified to the centre of the screen.
- Credits cannot make a role appear specific to a gender, for example 'camera man', which can be written as 'camera operator' which doesn't suggest a gender.
- Credit length should be between 25 - 30 seconds.
The BBC also has different rules depending on the type of production company. Due to the fact that Big Laughs Network would be considered an Independent Production Company, there are some extra guidelines that should be adhered to. These include:
- The company branding should appear on the end card and be no more than the name of the production company and their logo.
- The end card should hold for three seconds.
- "for BBC" should be written in the font Gill Sans Regular
- The BBC logo cannot be more than 10% of a 4x3 screen format.
I have made an example end card to show what ours could possibly look like, adhering to all the guidelines set by the BBC.

We have yet to decide whether our credit style will follow these guidelines or if we will try to be more creative with them. An initial idea we had was to have the credits appear in an Instagram feed, names of cast and crew in the descriptions of pictures and to have the images, stills from the episode. This links with the theme of the pilot episode and with Annie trying to become Instagram famous. However, if we take into consideration the other episode we have planned this might not work as the Instagram idea isn't featured in each episode. Our credit style will depend on whether we decide to make them match the pilot or if we go more traditional and make the credit suitable and work for all other hypothetical episodes.
