PRE-PRODUCTION • Outnumbered | Filming Style

In order to help with my plan for the filming style for Young & Famous, looking at other British Comedy's will allow me to identify a possible traditional style for British sitcoms and what works best depending on the style of show.

Outnumbered is British sitcom that began in 2007, lasting 5 series ending in 2014. If follows "the daily rollercoaster of life with growing children, staring Hugh Dennis as the father and Claire Skinner as the mother." (BBC, 2017).

Outnumbered (2007 - 2014)
In terms of filming style, Outnumbered is (from my research) all handheld. Lots of the humour in Outnumbered from dialogue and facial expressions of characters, so the use of close up shots and singles on characters who are delivering a humous line of dialogue is effective in making it obvious to the audience of the comedy element.

Outnumbered (Series 3, Episode 2) Image 1
Each character in Outnumbered has a very specific personality and are easily identifiable, so by allowing each character to have their own single shots, even in scenes with several other characters, it allows for all characters to be at the forefront and present, never getting lost in a scene.

Young & Famous also requires of characters personalities and dialogue for the comedy element of the show, therefore in our multi-cam set up, it will be important for me to plan with the director the positioning of the cameras to allow for the most effective close ups on the characters in each scene.

The wide shot used at the beginning of a location chance shows the audience that we have moved onto a different scene in the house. It also identifies who is initially in the scene and where they are placed. The close ups on characters cut between them during their conversation to show facial expressions and emphasis comedic lines and important parts of dialogue. These shots also situate the audience within the room, allowing them to feel as if they are part of the conversation.

Outnumbered (Series 3, Episode 2) Image 4
The lighting in Outnumbered is very natural. Many of the scenes in the programme take place in their house and some of the lighting used seems to come from windows located in the property.

Image 3 is an example of a wide shot used in Outnumbered which shows a window in the room. In Image 4, shadows on the wall show the light coming from the window and also the highlights on the character Pete's face. This use of lighting gives the show a natural look and makes the scenes inside their house feel homely and light.

Young & Famous - Test Shoot 1
I think this style is very effective in creating the appearance of a family home is something I wish to incorporate in Young & Famous as we are also trying to create a family feel.
