PRE-PRODUCTION • Green Light Pitch | Development

For our green light pitch, we began by creating a list of the elements we wanted to include in the pitch and the split them up according to whose role they matched with. This allowed us to have a substantial amount of research and initial ideas done but the time we came to pitch. I was responsible for writing these sections:

  • Front Page Design (incl. Production Company Logo and Young & Famous logo)
  • Lighting Styles
  • Filming Styles
  • Test Shoots on Location
  • We also shared the task of writing the synopsis and the descriptions of our roles within the production.

Lighting Styles:

To show the style of lighting we wanted for Young & Famous, I created a mood board with some example images of how wanted it too look. This included images from Gavin & Stacey and Outnumbered. From speaking to the director about the kind of lighting style she wanted, it became clear that my challenge would be to create lots of natural lighting. Some of the ways I suggested of doing this included choosing a location with large windows that allow lots of natural light to enter the rooms we were filming in. I also suggested using artificial lighting with a natural filter for scenes taking place during the day and a tungsten filter for scenes taking place in the evening as to give the effect of natural house lights. It is also important that with the artificial lighting, we light from above to replicate house lights rather than directing the light straight on at eye level which wouldn’t look natural.

Filming Styles:

For the filming style of Young & Famous we wanted wanted to keep with our natural feel of the show. My discussion with the director ending in us deciding to use quite static shots with some small camera movements. In order to do this, I have decided a Multi-camera shoot would be a nice way of incorporating the wants of the director whist also including the traditional style of filming a live sitcom. This also allows us to keep up with continuity as actors might improv some of their lines due to the comedy aspect of the show. My aim would be to have one camera set on a wide shot of the scene and the to use the other two cameras to film medium close ups on the characters in the scene.

Test Shoots on Locations:

Prior to the pitch day, I organised a small test shoot at our chosen location, to test out some different cameras and different camera positions. This gave us a good idea of how shoot days might work and our possibilities for shooting, how much equipment we could fit on the location and how much lighting we might need.
