STUDIO PRODUCTION • Game Show History

Image
A television game show involves contestants answering questions or solving puzzles in order to win a prize. 1930s - 1950s The first game show to air was "Spelling Bee" broadcast live in 1938. As the title suggests, the show was essentially a spelling bee where contestants would have to simply spell a series of words chosen for them. In the 1950s, television became more accessible and popular and game shows were in high demand.  1960s - 1970s This time period saw a decline of game shows in the United States, however in the UK, they remained a fixed part of our television scheduling. The show 'Jeopardy!' was first aired in 1964 and ran until 1975, it was a popular US show where the contestants were given general knowledge clues that were answers to a question, the contestants then had to phrase the question their clues were answering. Shows such as 'Family Feud' and 'Wheel of Fortune' debuted in the 1970s.  1980s - 1990s In the UK, g

STUDIO PRODUCTON • OFCOM

Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK. "We regulate the TV, radio and video-on-demand sectors, fixed-line telecoms, mobiles and postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate." The watershed is at 9pm and anything shown before this time should be suitable for children to watch. ("Children" includes anyone under the age of 15).  The things that most relevant to The Big Movie Quiz are offensive language and sexual references. The show is to be broadcast at 9pm therefore we can broadcast offensive language to an extent. There are still come words that we would not be allowed to broadcast and it cannot be excessive.  In terms of sexual references, material that is equivalent to the BBFC's R18 rating must not be broadcast at any time. If there is to be any images and/or language of a song or sexual nature must be justified by the context, meaning that the service and time of broadcast must be considered, the othe

STUDIO PRODUCTION • My Role - Social Media and Graphics

After the interviewing process for the show, I was given my choice which was "Social media, Promotions DOP and editor and Graphics Operator". I chose to interview for this role because: I enjoy the social media a nd promotions side, I already update the social media aspect the online student news show Student Yak, therefore I already have experience in this area and know that it's important to keep updating the pages and keeping the audience interested.  I liked the DOP and editor aspect of the role because it still allows me to be creative an help to create the trailers and promotional videos for the show.  The graphics side of the role really appealed to me as graphics are something I have taken a recent interest in. For my last project, I created an animation so I feel that I am in a good position with my knowledge of how to use editing software including photoshop and after effects.  I also interviewed for the roles of Production Manager and VT Editor/Vi

STUDIO PRODUCTION • Floor Plan, Camera and Lighting

I want to use the maximum amount of space in the studio which is why I have out my set this way round. This gives us room to to have the audience spread out more and it also puts them close to the exit for easy access and exit. It will allow us room for the cameras and will make any camera movements easy as there will be room to maneuver them around. It also allows for room for props to be brought on a off set without getting in the way of the cameras of audience and will be safer.  I want to have 4 cameras, 3 of them on tripods and one handheld to capture of the action of the rounds that will take place during the show. Because the show is filmed "as live" I also want to have a GoPro in the ball pool to get a different view on the first round and to be able to capture the action up close.

STUDIO PRODUCTION • Feedback From Ideas

Image
Some of the feedback I received was: Strong theme and idea Add more detail to the rounds, maybe make them slightly harder Think about the VTs and make sure they fit with the show  From the feedback about my VTs and talking about taking one of them on location, I have decided that I think it would be good to film some of my VTs at a real fairground. This will not only add to the atmosphere of the show but give the audience a sense of being in the real location. I want one my VT round to take place at the fairground and for it to incorporate the rides and stalls. I also want to film the VT where the two teams are introduced to take place at the fair.  In terms of locations, I have been looking into filming at Dreamland in Margate. They often have film there and it has recently been used to film a music video and for a clothing brand advert. I like the location because not only is the quite local but it also has a retro look to it and will nicely fit with the theme

STUDIO PRODUCTION • Sam and Mark's Big Friday Wind-up Research

"Prepare to laugh your socks off at Sam & Mark's Big Friday Wind-Up. From celebrities to the studio audience, no one is safe from the boys' hilarious pranks" Sam & Mark's Big Friday Wind-Up is a children entertainment series that began in 2011. The show takes them format of a someones family member being embarrassed on the show. Sam and Mark interact with the audience and chose one member to take part in the show, this is when their family member is brought out and they're given the chance to play through a series of rounds, to win prizes and to embarrass their chosen family member. They have a range on celebrity guests, and there is always one on each episode. The show contains lots of different elements that I have taken inspiration from to help develop my show.  The show doesn't try to hide the fact that it is filmed inside a studio, they use lots of stage lighting to light up the show and have it the background for the

STUDIO PRODUCTION • Idea Development

Image
After splitting into groups and discussing our ideas, I have developed mine with some help to come up with a theme and name for the show.  Theme: I have decided that the show is now going to be based on a funfair and the different rounds will now be the teams playing different fairground games. The set design will be a skyline of a fair, and I want to have a popcorn and candy floss stall as props in around the set.  Round 1: The two teams will have to a series of quick fire questions, the amount of questions each team gets right will be the number of throws they get at the coconut shy. Different coconuts are worth different amounts of points. Ones closer are worth 10 and ones further back and higher are with more as they are harder to hit. The aim is to get as many points as possible from the coconut shy as those are the points added to their total score.  Round 2: 2 members of the audience are chosen at random and made to come up on set. They are then sat beh

STUDIO PRODUCTION • Initial Ideas

Image
Initially, I decided that I wanted my show to be: Family orientated Entertaining and fun  Either a quiz/game show From this, I then looked at already existing shows that followed a similar criteria.  I have decided that I want my show to have 2 families as the contestants, who will each take part in a series of rounds that consist of children's game, playing on the idea that the children in the teams are the ones with all the knowledge, similar to the idea of the show "Are You Smarter Than A 10-Year-Old?". O ne of the rounds, I would be a quiz round where the adults and children would have to answer questions about shows and books that were meant for children. I wanted to include different rounds where the contestants have to compete against each other in their teams to accumulate the most points in order to win the show. Other ideas I had were,  the teams would have to finish the movie quote from the children's movie, the children from e
