TV Drama - Fargo

Fargo

Fargo is an American black comedy crime drama, written by Noah Hawley.

The series is based on the original 1996 film 'Fargo'The film was written and directed by the Coen Brothers who are executive producers on the TV show.

Series on is set in January 2006 and follows Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) as he travels to Bemidji and influences the town with his violent and enigmatic character. He meets insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) which initiates a series of murders across the city, including Lesters Wife, Police Chief Vern Thurman and a man the Lorne Malvo has abducted.

The show also follows Deputy Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman) who attempts to solve lots of crimes committed across the city as she believes they could be connected to Lester Nygaard and Lorne Malvo.

Fargo is directed by:
  • Adam Bernstein who has directed episodes of Breaking Bad.
  • Scott Winant who has also directed episodes of Breaking Bad
  • Colin Bucksey who has directed episodes of Breaking Bad, NCIS and Miami Vice.
  • Randall Einhorn who is best known for his work on The office.
  •  Matt Shakman who has directed The Good Guys, Psych and The Good Wife.

I chose this series because I like the style in which it is directed. I like the smooth and sleek wide establishing shots of the locations and they use it to their advantage. Many of the scenes are set outside in the which allows them to use lots of shots similar to this one.

I like the way Einhorn uses lots of unrealistic shots in his episodes, for example by putting the camera by the wheel of a car and having it look up at Lorne Malvo talking to someone is quite a voyeuristic shot and not a camera angle that the audience would expect to see the action happen from.

Although lots of the shots are really smooth and quite slow, Fargo uses sound to build up the tension in the episodes. The scenes I chose are from Season 1, Episode 3 which was directed by Randall Einhorn. I chose this scene to film because I feel that I could direct this scene in my own style and that I could achieve similar locations. This scenes uses lots of natural lighting and contains little dialogue.

The first scene in Episode 3 I am going to direct
