Director - Nicolas Winding Refn

Nicolas Winding Refn is a writer, director and producer. He is known for directing the neo-noir crime film Drive (2011), for which he received the Best Director Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and thriller Only God Forgives (2013), both of which are two of my favourite films.

Drive:

Drive follows a get away driver and Hollywood stuntman (Ryan Gosling) as he finds himself in a difficult situation after he tries to help out a neighbour.

Nicolas Winding Refn uses lots of artificial lighting to set the mood and tone of his films. He uses lots of tracking shots and dolly shots, so that the camera is always moving. I like this style and the effect is has on the films.

The different coloured lighting has different connotations, for example the red used in Only God Forgives connotes blood and danger and the blue lighting used in drive could connote loneliness and coldness - reflecting the main characters personality. Although the highly contrasting colours are said to be because he is colour-blind and can't see them any other way. He often has a strong male lead in his films, for example, in Drive, Only God Forgives and Bronson.

Nicolas Winding Refn's directing style inspires me to experiment with different types of lighting in order to reflect the mood and tone of my story and the character's personality.
