PRE-PRODUCTION • Outnumbered | Filming Style

Image
In order to help with my plan for the filming style for Young & Famous , looking at other British Comedy's will allow me to identify a possible traditional style for British sitcoms and what works best depending on the style of show.  Outnumbered is British sitcom that began in 2007, lasting 5 series ending in 2014. If follows "the daily rollercoaster of life with growing children, staring Hugh Dennis as the father and Claire Skinner as the mother." (BBC, 2017). Outnumbered (2007 - 2014) In terms of filming style, Outnumbered is (from my research) all handheld . Lots of the humour in Outnumbered from dialogue and facial expressions of characters, so the use of close up shots and singles on characters who are delivering a humous line of dialogue is effective in making it obvious to the audience of the comedy element. Outnumbered (Series 3, Episode 2) Image 1 Each character in Outnumbered has a very specific per...

PRE-PRODUCTION • Filming in V-Log | Research

Image
"V-log allows for a wider dynamic range of luminance information that is more in line with how the human eye sees things". Although the image appears much flatter, it its a much wider dynamic range.  When using V-Log, it's important to have a proper white balance and proper exposure. To help with achieving the correct exposure, the zebra tool on the camera helps to see which areas for over exposed. When filming normally, for caucasian skin tone, the more highlighted part of the face, usually the forehead  should be around 70% (IRE). But when filming with V-Log, this should be more like 50% - 55%.  Clipping can happen when something is too over exposed. In normal filming this happens around 105% but in V-Log this is 80% which is why it's so important that the exposure is correct depending on the filming settings being used.  In V-Log, the camera places tones at a darker level than before so it's difficult to see if something ...

PRE-PRODUCTION • Panasonic DVX200 | Research

Image
The Panasonic DVX200 offers many different filming options that I interesting in using and exploring.  Panasonic DVX200 Filming Quality  There are many different options available for different filming resolutions, from HD to 4K. The Panasonic offers within each bracket another selection of options with different frame rates. This allows for many different options and will be something that I definitely test during a test shoot to find the best one that will work for us, considering what is usually used for television shows and what looks good.  External Batteries The batteries that come with these cameras are external which is very useful for us as we will most likely need to change them regularly. Due to my decision to film with a Multicam set up, this is a really useful feature as we will be filming for long periods of time and will need batteries readily available when they run out.  Quantity My plan for the mult...

PRE-PRODUCTION • Camera Workshop

Image
During this camera workshop, we got to test out the new camera equipment. We went through the different setting and the new things that these cameras were capable of. This was a good opportunity to see if these cameras would be ones we would be interested in using for our third year projects and just a chance to get some more experience with the cameras.  We first tested out the JVC which was very different to any of the cameras I have previously used. As the DOP this project, this was a really useful workshop for because it allowed me to see what cameras we might use. The JVC was a really nice camera and has many different options for different types of filming. I liked that it has it's own shoulder mount so it can comfortably be used for filming handheld. The new Rotolight was also good to test out as this is definitely a piece of equipment i would like to use and test more. The fact that you can adjust the temperature of the light as well ad the bright...

PRE-PRODUCTION • Sitcom Genre Filming Styles | Research

Image
Sitcoms can vary in filming style and have developed over time to meet the demands of their audience. Two of the different ways sitcoms are filmed are witha single-camera setup and a multi-camera set up. Both have their own pros and cons which is something that I aim to look into in oder to decide which style of filming would be best for Young & Famous.  Single-Camera: Single camera sitcoms have grown in popularity of the last decade, contemporary examples being the American shows Modern Family and Silicon Valley. The idea of using one single camera is that these sitcoms are filmed much more like films but without the live audience of a traditional sitcom. This can not only make the episode themselves appear like shot films but it can also change the humour of the show and make them feel more like a comedy feature film instead.  Multi-Camera: Multi-Camera setups represent a more traditional style of sitcoms which include shows such as Friends, Mrs ...

PRE-PRODUCTION • Green Light Pitch | Development

For our green light pitch, we began by creating a list of the elements we wanted to include in the pitch and the split them up according to whose role they matched with. This allowed us to have a substantial amount of research and initial ideas done but the time we came to pitch. I was responsible for writing these sections:   Front Page Design (incl. Production Company Logo and Young & Famous logo) Lighting Styles Filming Styles Test Shoots on Location We also shared the task of writing the synopsis and the descriptions of our roles within the production. Lighting Styles: To show the style of lighting we wanted for Young & Famous , I created a mood board with some example images of how wanted it too look. This included images from Gavin & Stacey and Outnumbered . From speaking to the director about the kind of lighting style she wanted, it became clear that my challenge would be to create lots of natural lighting. Some of the ...

PRE-PRODUCTION • Branding | Development

Image
For the branding of Young & Famous, I initially created some different deigns that we could choose from and then pitched them to the rest of the group for their opinions. I created two documents that contained three different fonts and 3 different colour schemes. The fonts were relatively similar as I felt they all matched the theme of the show. With the colour schemes, I went with the tree that matched our characters the most and that were noticeable. The first was mainly bright colours, the second was a mix of colours, all with a slight pastel tone and the third was more 70's inspired which is linked to our characters history.  In the end we chose the second colour palette displayed and the third font shown. Our reasoning for choosing this colour palette was because we felt the mixture of colours would make the logo stand out more but also would represent all the different aspect of Annie and Dean's lives. We also decided that the pink and blue would represe...
