PRODUCTION • Shoot Day 8&9 | Reshoot

Shoot Day 8

The reshoot was planned to only take one day of filming as we had organised all of the actors we need to come to the location on the Monday and Laura had created a schedule of all the different shots and scenes we needed to redo. We initially had an issue when one of our actors cancelled who was the main reason for the reshoot. However, it was too late to cancel and there were still some extra shots that we could film that would benefit the production.

The first thing we started with was trying to film some extra shots of our Marie character when she approaches the house in scene 17. This did not work at all as the weather was a disaster which meant that wind and rain in this new shot would not match up with the scene we already had. We decided to try and carry on with this shot and get it anyway as we had booked our actress to come on location for the day so we should try and complete it.

After this, we came back inside and decided that there was no way that we could film outside again as the weather was not working for us. This meant that we would have to change our plan for filming scene 11 in the kitchen where the plan was to film through the window which would mean being outside. As a group the producer, director and I had a discussion as to what we were going to do about this. The director and I then decided that we would redo one of our close ups of our Annie character as that shot was the one that didn’t work as well as the others and we would position ourselves so that she would be facing us as she was speaking rather than us having a profile shot of the character. This gave us an almost POV shot from Dean's position which works as well. The other option was to bring the actors away from the counter so that we could get in front of them however this didn't work for us due to the fact that the kitchen isn't very wide to the actors were pretty much standing against the wall behind them which made it very obvious that they weren't standing where they were supposed to be.

Along with this we also re-filmed our closeup shots of the ingredients in the counter where we made the recipe much bolder and easier to read than the shot we had before whilst emphasising the gross ingredients that he is including in his cookies. This shot was much clean than the one we had before as previously we had to fake it and scaled up the video so that we could have a closer shot whereas this time we made sure to get a variety of shot sizes so that when it came to the edit we had lots of different options.

I think the reshoot was well planned and all the documents that were made for it such as the blocking and the shot list really helped us to stay focused and on target, it also meant that we didn’t miss or forget anything because it was all written down and we were ticking things off as we went. I also think that due to the fact we knew that there would be no possibility of doing another reshoot everyone was on top of their roles and made sure that we did everything efficiently and professionally.

Although it couldn’t be helped that on of our actors didn’t turn up, I would have liked to have previously thought of different options and ways of filming a scene so that if I was to ever get stuck in a situation like that again, I would instantly have some options of different ways to suggest and try. Overall this day we very successful, I feel as though got as much footage as we could of despite the weather and our missing actor and we worked well together as a team to make it a success.

Shoot Day 9

Laura managed to organise the actor to come to the location the next day to film his section of the scene we needed. This was great because it meant that we could complete our reshoot and gets the extra shots that we really needed for this scene.

As well as the shots for scene 17 we also agreed on using the green screen to film a small clip of the character advertising his cooking show, this will then be placed in the television in scene 7 where Annie is looking for a yoga channel and sees the advert, straight after Dean has just mentioned “The Last Dish”. This was to establish the character earlier on in the shoe make him more known so that when he appears in scene 17, the audience have an idea of who he is and why he is there at the house.

I found using the green screen quite easy to set up as I have previously used it many times, such as for our second year Digital News Project ‘Student Yak’ and throughout this project. I made sure that the camera was set up the way the rest of the shoot had been done so that the footage matched, and I used the LED lighting kit we had to light the green screen so that there were no shadows what makes it easier to edit.

Due to us filming on a different day where we only had this one actor, I had to make sure that this new shot we filmed would work with our previous footage and that there were no continuity issues. To do this, I decided on a close up of the characters face from a POV angle of another of our actors so that they wouldn’t be seen in the shot even if there were there for this filming day. I also had Laura hold a boom pole in the shot which would look as though she was one of the crew members. This will hopefully mean that these new shots match us with our wide shots and other shot of our characters.

We had begun the day at 9am where we went straight into setting up all the equipment including the camera and green screen as well as doing a quick. Test on the outside shot to make sure the idea would work, this allowed us to get started straight away as soon as the actor arrived and was dressed in costume, so no time was wasted. I think we managed to get sorted and organise who could do what on the day as we didn’t have any extra helpers or assistants, so we had to get everything ready ourselves. Whist Becca was director our actor, Laura and I worked on the more technical side of things with Laura recording the sound for us on the day as we didn’t have a sound assistant. Although this would have been preferable, we made it worked and everything turned out well.
