DIGITAL NEWS • Test Shoot & Pictures for the Website

Image
For the About Us page of our website we wanted to include images of ourselves and short descriptions so that our audience can get to know us. For these pictures, we set up in lecture room 2 and get to grips with using the new LED lights. Becca went away and edited these pictures, ready for the website.  Images from Student Yak Website We also wanted to do a test shoot of our script to see how well it worked when read aloud and if each section flowed naturally from one to the other. We filmed this in from of the same white back ground as we weren't too worried about the production side at this point.  Going through our script really helped us to work out what parts of the script were good and which parts still needed work. We made not of these and Becca and I went away and reworked the script.

DIGITAL NEWS • Logo Development

Image
When it came to designing our logo we know what sort of thing we wanted. To get a basic idea os what it might look like, Josh being the editor and designer, collected some stock images from the internet and put them together to make what we wanted. From this, we then sent our ideas to a friend of Ida's who is also graphic designer and asked her to produce a logo for us.  Logo Design 1 Logo Design 2 Logo Design 3 We loved the logo designed she sent us but all agreed that they didn't really fit our brand. We went back and looked at the previous logo josh had created and decided that we wanted to look quite similar. I then took the old logo and re-drew it, making a few changes along the way so that it wasn't exactly the same.  The final logo design looks like this: After creating the basic design, I showed the logo to the rest of the group and we all decided on the colours for each section until we were all happy. this is the final logo that ...

DIGITAL NEWS • The LAD Bible

Image
The LAD Bible  is a company that specialises in posting a mixture of photos and videos across social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Vine and YouTube. Their website is the 12th most popular in the UK, and posts lots of relatable content to its target audience of 18 - 24-year-olds, lending itself to social media.  They recently launched their own app, making it even more accessible, and with receiving more than 3.5 likes and shares every day, and with over 17 million followers across social media, it is almost impossible to go to one of these platforms and not see and LAD bible post.  This is a great place for a video to go viral, with is constantly being shared and multiple people seeing it. Some of the content that is posted they find themselves and others are submitted by viewers. We had the idea of possibly trying to submit the viral videos we make for our digital news unit to them and seeing if they would ...

DIGITAL NEWS • Our Viral Videos

Image
The main story of our production is looking into the world of viral videos and what it takes for a video to become viral. In order to make our video more interesting, we decided to take on the challenge of going viral ourselves and making our own videos. Our initial idea was looking into whether production vale made a difference in the a amount of views and shares a video got. We chose to upload our videos to Facebook because it seems viral videos are often shares mostly on Facebook before going onto other platforms. We want to upload them at the same time and then compare which one does better.  Cat Video: From our research we found that audience like videos containing cats.  We decided that Josh would take on the task of making this video, which we decided would have a high production value, using  DSLR, recorded sound and lots of editing. Hurting Josh: this would be our low production value video, where we would only use a phone to film....

DIGITAL NEWS • Development

Image
As a group, we have had lots of meeting to discuss our production and have often given each other tasks to go home and complete. In our first development meeting we went through all the things that had been completed and what still needed to be done.  Ida had been in contact with one of our contributors Katie Joslin and told us that she'd agreed to speak to us for our interview. Becca went through some sections of the script that she'd written already and everyone went through and we all added in little jokes that we wanted to include.  George Wing had also agreed to be a co-presenter and we scheduled a meeting with both of then just so we could explain to them what our show is about and what sort of things we'd be expecting from them.  Josh suggested that we plan a test shoot so that we could get a feel for what we wanted our show to look like and so that we could get used to using some of the new equipment.  I'd had previously done so...

DIGITAL NEWS • Script & Structure

Image
Structure: Once we had our idea sorted we need to come up with a structure so that we could easily write our script make sure that we got all our information in. We began writing our basic structure on a whiteboard so that we could all clearly see where everything was going to go and we could easily more the different sections around until they fit.  Script: From this structure, writing the script was much easier because it was clear what sections had to be written.  As co-writers, Becca and I went through the different sections and wrote the commentary for the studio sections of our production.  For the interview package, as a group, we came up with a range of questions to ask our interviewee and together decided on the presenters into and outro to the package.  For our live package, we sat together and worked out what we wanted our reporter to say and what questions we wanted him to ask the contributors involved. This has gone through many chang...

DIGITAL NEWS • Writing Workshop

Image
The press release we were given for our writing workshop was from the Department for Work and Pensions about the amount of young people going into a work experience placement and sector-based work academies. We found this quite difficult because we originally knew nothing about the subject so had to do quite a lot of research in order to understand what the press release was saying. Intro More than half of young people who enter the government work placement scheme are failing to find jobs, according to new figures released today. Jane Hill reports. Main “You can’t get a job without work experience but you can’t get work experience without a job”. This is a saying that young people are too often hearing. The Department for Work and Pensions have introduced a work placement scheme. They say it helps young people gain the experience and skills they need to increase their chances of employment. However, figures obtained by BBC News from a freedom of information re...
