Soft By Simon Ellis (2007)

A contemporary drama based in an urban setting, focusing on a father and son's relationship when faced with challenges such as gang culture.

Soft explores the complex relationships between a father and some but also the relationship between they and a group of youths on the street. It deals with issues such as violence and gang culture. A drama aspect of this short film could be the conflicts in the decisions they have to make and how they affect others.

Son looking up to his father as the gang approach the house.

The main protagonist, the father, is represented as insecure, passive and introverted. With clothing to make his look like a typical everyday working man. His goal could be that he just wants to get by in life, following his daily routine. He could also want to influence his son more and be his role model in life. the conflict both the father and son go through is the gang that terrorise them, the father also has an inner conflict of being a coward and not standing up to the gang to protect his son - this is something that he is ashamed of and wants to overcome.

The change in the story is the relationship between the father and son. At the end of the video, the son drops the cricket bat in front on the father, this shows the audience a loss of respect from the son and how he no longer sees him in the same way. The fact that the son is the one to step up and defend them both might make the father feel guilty for not taking control of the situation himself.
