DIGITAL NEWS • Topical Waffle

Topical Waffle is an online news show that covers all the main news stories across the world for that week is a comical manner. The show is produced by the writers of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and lasted for 2 episodes. It is quite fast paced with lots of different things going on at once. The news that they do present is only a brief amount of information but enough that you know what news story they're talking about. Generally, when they mention a topic, the writers of the show have done it so that they make a joke about it and turn the news into something funny.

  • This gave us a good idea of the kind of things we wanted to do for our own production. We liked the pace of the show and how they managed to covey news in a fun way. We had already decided on our target audience which is students so they was a good way of making news entertaining for the younger viewer.

Looking at the technical side of the show, there is clearly lots of editing involved as the visual effects are mostly part of the jokes, meaning it relies heavily on this to make the show a whole. There is a mixture of really obvious jokes that are said by the host and some more subtle ones like an image appearing onscreen with a funny title.

  • In terms of our production, we also wanted to do lots of different things with visual effects and experiment with what we could do. We think that by including all these things, we'll be able to keep our audiences interest for longer and make our news show more engaging. We aim to have this visual element run through the whole thing, including in our interview and our package so that all the news and facts we present are interesting and exciting to watch.

Overall, I find the show really funny and entertaining to watch. I think that because we are students ourselves and we like it, it's a good example for us to see what other students might like and what kind of things we can do with our production to make it just as interesting.
