DIGITAL NEWS • Writing Workshop

The press release we were given for our writing workshop was from the Department for Work and Pensions about the amount of young people going into a work experience placement and sector-based work academies.

We found this quite difficult because we originally knew nothing about the subject so had to do quite a lot of research in order to understand what the press release was saying.

Intro

More than half of young people who enter the government work placement scheme are failing to find jobs, according to new figures released today. Jane Hill reports.

Main

“You can’t get a job without work experience but you can’t get work experience without a job”. This is a saying that young people are too often hearing.

The Department for Work and Pensions have introduced a work placement scheme. They say it helps young people gain the experience and skills they need to increase their chances of employment.

However, figures obtained by BBC News from a freedom of information request show that of the 337,000 young people who’ve entered the scheme, 42% aren’t actually getting a job.

INTERVIEWS :

- A participant of the scheme who obtained a job
o How did the scheme benefit you?
o What kind of skills did they teach you?

- Someone who was unsuccessful
o Why do you think you were unsuccessful?
o What do you think of the scheme overall?

- Government minister –
o What jobs are offered? Skilled or unskilled?
o Why are so many failing to come out with a job?
