2009

Equals Three Logo


  • The YouTube series "Equals Three" began in 2009 where the creator, Ray William Johnson who was also the presenter would react and provide commentary on viral videos. 
  • Some consider this series to have "pioneered this genre", although reactions videos are popular now, at the time they were almost non-existent.





2011

  • The series reached it's peak in 2011 where it have a large following and was the first YouTube channel to reach 5 million subscribers. 
  • Johnson then created his own company called "Equals Three Studios" where he continued to produce this series. 
  • Although after he discontinued a popular side project - which become one of the most popular rap/parody channels, his Equals Three series began to see a decline in their following popularity. 

2013

  • In 2013, he announced he was no longer gong to be the host of the show and he made his final =3 video in March 2014.
  • This caused a massive loss of support form their audience. They brought in multiple new hosts for the show however, they were never able to get back to how popular they were before. 
  • Their following continued to fall and many other new reaction channels were beginning to become established so they now also had competition in their genre. 



2016

  • The YouTube channel still has 10 million subscribers, but compared to other channels now a days which have over 20 million, this is very many. 

Research Findings

  • Audiences are not only invested in the series but the brand too so having a strong brand and being consistent with it seems to prove popular. 
  • The change in presenter caused a decline in their following, possibly because people felt that the new presenters would do the show justice.
  • Audiences enjoy watching other people react to videos - something we aim to include as one of our attempts to go viral.

Using this research, I think it's important that we stick with our brand and keep up with the promotion of our channel, trying to reach as many different audiences as possible as we will not be the only student news channel.

I chose to be the director of photography (DOP) because I feel the over the course of the last two years my camera and lighting skills have increased greatly and I wanted to focus of those skills more in my final year. To fully immerse myself into being a DOP, it is important that I researched deeply into the role and what it would include. Being a Director of photography "includes creating the visual identity, or look of the film/ tv programme, they work with the Director, camera crew and lighting department to achieve this and they manage all aspects of filming, from ordering and overseeing equipment to reviewing footage." Scott and Bailey - TV Drama

Scott and Bailey is a British crime drama focusing on the lives of two female detectives. DC Rachel Bailey and DC Janet Scott are not only work colleagues but close friends, a main part of the story is their relationship and the problems they have.  In each episode, there are 3 to 4 different story lines, the main one being based in the police station, centred on a crime and the others about the personal lives of the main characters. For my script, I would like to do something similar, I want to have the main story line revolve around a major case they have given, and then the personal lives of my two main characters, Shane and Annie.  The characters have many flaws that are pointed out in multiple episodes.
