DIGITAL NEWS • Writing Workshop

Image
The press release we were given for our writing workshop was from the Department for Work and Pensions about the amount of young people going into a work experience placement and sector-based work academies. We found this quite difficult because we originally knew nothing about the subject so had to do quite a lot of research in order to understand what the press release was saying. Intro More than half of young people who enter the government work placement scheme are failing to find jobs, according to new figures released today. Jane Hill reports. Main “You can’t get a job without work experience but you can’t get work experience without a job”. This is a saying that young people are too often hearing. The Department for Work and Pensions have introduced a work placement scheme. They say it helps young people gain the experience and skills they need to increase their chances of employment. However, figures obtained by BBC News from a freedom of information re...

DIGITAL NEWS • Satirical news

Image
Satirical news is a style of news that usually done in a comedic form, sometimes known as fake news.   There are two different types of satirical news, one being where they comment on real news events and one where they completely make up their stories. This includes shows such as Onion News or Faking News which are popular online more than on TV.  This is similar to our style of news as we want a large humour element to our script and to have it as main part of our production. We will be reporting on real life news events for our production but in a funny style. We think this will be the best way to interact with our audience considering them being younger. From my other research into already existing Student News channels, I thinks ours will be quite different because we have this funny element to it.

DIGITAL NEWS • Topical Waffle

Image
Topical Waffle is an online news show that covers all the main news stories across the world for that week is a comical manner. The show is produced by the writers of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and lasted for 2 episodes.  It is quite fast paced with lots of different things going on at once. The news that they do present is only a brief amount of information but enough that you know what news story they're talking about. Generally, when they mention a topic, the writers of the show have done it so that they make a joke about it and turn the news into something funny.  This gave us a good idea of the kind of things we wanted to do for our own production. We liked the pace of the show and how they managed to covey news in a fun way. We had already decided on our target audience which is students so they was a good way of making news entertaining for the younger viewer.  Looking at the technical side of ...

DIGITAL NEWS • Online Student News

Image
The Independant | Student In order to get some ideas for our student news channel, I started doing research into some other already existing channels. When looking, I found that some main online news websites like The Guardian and The Independent have their own section online that specifically target students. These contained articles about things like university and student finance, however other than these topics, they contained nothing extra or different to the regular news site and in no other way targets students.  The Guardian | Students I felt that they weren't much different to the main news section and overall looked the same. They keep with their brand and haven't differed too much. This I understand as they want people to know that they own it and are the creators, but at the same time, it would be interesting and exciting to see something different.  When reading these, as a student I personally didn’t find them any more interesting than the ...

DIGITAL NEWS • Katie Joslin

Image
Katie Joslin - YouTube Channel For our main news story, we wanted to interview someone who might be able to give us some insight into the world of YouTube and what it takes to be a successful YouTuber. One of the new first years just so happens to be a YouTuber with quite a following. 6,477 Subscribers • 187,581 Views • Joined September 2011 After watching her summer project, we decided that she would be great to interview and would have lots of interesting things she could tell us. Ida spoke to Katie and explained the basis of our project and what we were trying to achieve, asking Katie if she would be willing to participate in our project. She said that she would like to take part so we now need to set up a meeting, which we have planned for this Friday (30/09/16) so that we can go through the types of questions we will be asking her and for us to find out what answers she might give us to that we can prepare for the interview.

DIGITAL NEWS • Ray William Johnson | Research

Image
2009 Equals Three Logo The YouTube series "Equals Three" began in 2009 where the creator, Ray William Johnson who was also the presenter would react and provide commentary on viral videos.  Some consider this series to have "pioneered this genre", although reactions videos are popular now, at the time they were almost non-existent. 2011 Ray William Johnson hosting =3 The series reached it's peak in 2011 where it have a large following and was the first YouTube channel to reach 5 million subscribers.  Johnson then created his own company called "Equals Three Studios" where he continued to produce this series.  Although after he discontinued a popular side project - which become one of the most popular rap/parody channels, his Equals Three series began to see a decline in their following popularity.  2013  Robby Motz - one of the new hosts In 2013, he announced he was no longer gong to be the host of the...

DIGITAL NEWS • Feedback

Image
In pitching our idea, we discussed the brand we had come up with and went through all the different sections we wanted to include. We talked about the specific stories we had found and which ones would work best.  Starting off with a brand was good because it meant we could easily choose stories that fit in with it, rather than creating a brand around one specific story.  Having different categories is good because then we're not just subjected to one type on news, we have the option to include a wide variety of things students will be interested in. We need to choose one main story to go with our video, and any others that find and still want to include can we written up as articles on our website.  Investigate local events such as film festivals that we could advertise and encourage students to go to.  Consider trying to create our own viral video and trying to go viral in oder to try and understand the process of being viral...

DIGITAL PRODUCTION • 25 Word Pitch

In one of our group meetings, we though it would be a good idea to come up with a 25 word pitch so that we could easily sum up the aim of our digital news channel and quickly get across to our audience what we are trying to achieve. • Student Yak aims to find entertaining news and views from all corners of the internet and bring it to you. Made by students for students. • After brainstorming together, we finally came up with what we think sums up our digital news channel perfectly. This will feature on our website and in all the description boxes of our social media channels.

DIGITAL NEWS • Online News Research

Image
Online news is becoming increasing popular as it is more accessible now than ever before. With the use of smart phones and tablets, it is really easy for audiences to access  the news whenever they want online rather than having to wait for it to be broadcast on TV or buy a newspaper. This changing the way we produce news and the format in which it is produced. "Audiences increasingly want news on any device, in any format, and at any time of day." This surge of online news has caused a higher competition for traditional forms of news like newspapers as they now have to try and keep up with the demands of modern audiences who want their news to be available when they want and where.  It is clear that a large amount of us read the news in some digital form. The competition is ever increasing and companies must try to not only keep up with the latest trends but also find new and innovative way to present their news.  In my research into ...

DIGITAL NEWS • Branding Ideas

Image
When deciding on the branding our channel, Josh had the idea of using a title he had previously created for a personal project he'd worked on in the summer. This worked with the idea we had the title conveyed nicely what our news channel is all about. We decided that for the website we were going to create, we wanted to have different sections so that we could split our news under heading so that they were easy to find. We gave them all specific titles that matched our title and branding. Some of the different titles we decided on are: TV/Film Yak - this would be where we would include different film events that are local to the area that students would be interested in going to such as outdoor screenings. We also had the idea to include 60-second film reviews of a wide range of films. (Un) Social Yak - This will be where we include some of the week's top social media stories that people have been interested in.  Viral Yak - We wanted to explore the idea of ...

DIGITAL NEWS • The Brief & Initial Ideas

Image
For this unit, we have been given the task of creating our own branded digital news channel, either through designing a website or Youtube channel around our brand that specifically targets the audience we choose within our groups. I have chosen to work with Josh Jones, Ida Frank, and Becca Bennett. All four of us have not worked on a project together so it will be interesting to work with some different people for this unit.  In our first meeting, we decided to discuss who would take what role within the project. this worked quite well for us as everyone had a different preference so it was easy to decide. ROLES: Josh: Presenter & Editor Becca: Director & Writer  Ida: Sound & sound Design Me: Director of Photography We talked about how although Becca would be writing our script, we would come together as a group to work on it, so that everyone could contribute their ideas and what they want to be included. Ida and I also talked...
