PRODUCTION • Shoot Day 4 | Production
This is the last day of this week that we're filming with our actors and also one of the more complicated days as we had 2 quite big scenes to film which for one we were filming Multicam and one we weren't because of the location and space that was available.
Cameras:
For scene 11 which was located in the kitchen, there is limited space in the room for equipment which meant that this scene had to be filmed multiple times with a shot changes throughout. Despite this taking slighting longer than if we were filming multi-cam, it allowed me to make sure that each shot was exactly how I wanted and I could focus my attention on the one or two cameras rather than all three. We filmed the wide shot and Dean's close up at the same time, and the rest of the shots were done single camera.
Due to the layout of the house, for scene 11, we had our actors facing away from us at the start as they were facing the counter and then the aim was as they started talking to each other they would turn themselves more towards the camera. This was down to the director to get them to follow and for some sections they did, however, there was may points where they were facing away from the cameras and speaking. As a group, we had had previous discussions about how this scene would work and it was decided that although this wasn't ideal, it was the only option we could think of at the time.
Scene 14:
Scene 14 took place outside the house in the front garden. This was to be Annie & Dean walking back to their house from Marie's. This was filmed with 2 cameras, one on a wide and another on a two shot. We filmed this a few times with different shot sizes so that we could get a close up of the robotic cat Arnold in the plant pot which during the scene Annie picks ups. We used natural lighting for this scene and had to put an ND filter onto the cameras because the sun was bright and due to the house being white, it reflected the sunlight, making the house look slightly overexposed.
Scene 15:
For this scene, we were using all three cameras which made the scene challenging to set up, however, would hopefully make things easier in the editing stage for things like continuity. I chose to have one wide shot which would act as the establishing shot of the location and would show the two characters together, and then a close up of each character cross shooting them so that the angles were clean and face on rather than profile shots. Once the set up had been completed, this worked well for us and made filming the scene go must quicker than it would have if we were only using one camera. This already meant that any changes in action that the actors did in different takes were acceptable because was had each take filmed from all angles.

I had some concerns about filming in the kitchen as the previous day where we filmed in the kitchen, we used the tungstens lights whereas on this shoot day we had the LED lighting kit. From initially just turning on the lights and setting up shot sizes, I could tell that the scenes looked different and that I would have to focus a good amount of time colour grading the scene where we used the tungstens as they have a strong orange hue to it where the LEDs made the location look cooler and slightly bluer.
For scene 15, we also used one light to illuminate the location and the others as key lights on the cast. This location is much darker than the kitchen so required us to use all 3 lights. The set up consisted of one light bouncing off ceiling and the other two focused on our two actors - this took some time to get working as we had the three cameras so space was slightly limited and working out the positioning of the lights to illuminate any shadows created by lights was tricky but due to our team working quickly and efficiently together me made this work and still managed to finish the shoot day early.
