PRODUCTION • Shoot Packs & Crew Meeting | Development

Before our shoot week, I had the idea of creating a shoot pack for each day of filming which would include the scene from the script we were filming, the blocking of the different locations and the sections of the shot list that we would be filming.

After discussing the idea with the director who agreed that this would be helpful, together we made then for each of our filming days. These ended up being thoroughly used throughout our filming days, with all crew members having a copy, they were constantly referred to and meant that everyone was on track and working together well as we all knew we were and what was going on.

These were not only helpful on shoot days but also for our crew meeting that we had before shoot week. This meeting was for everyone to be given a run through of how the shoot days would pan out, the kinds of things we would be filming and what each person would be tasked with doing.

My role as part of the meeting was to go through the technical side of things with my camera assistant and with Jemma who was recording our sound. For this, I went through the scenes in the script explaining the action and any camera movements there would be; this also included the positions of the cameras and resets we would have to do during a scene.

To help with visualising what we were discussing, having this meeting at our main location was very helpful as we could do a walkthrough of the rooms we were filming in and actually see where the cameras would be placed, referring to the previously agreed and tested blocking diagrams that the director and I had created. This made things much easier to explain meant that when it came to filming days, we were all familiar with the location and knew where things were going so we were able to stick to our schedule well as this reduced the amount of time I had to spend explaining where cameras and lights were going.
