Filming - Day 2 • Production

Image
Filming:  On our second day of filming we knew exactly what shots we wanted and what interviews we were going to re-film. We had previously planned out all the locations so we knew exactly where we wanted them to be. We chose to only film with one camera this time as filming with two made things quite complicated for us. This also helped us in the post-production stage as there would be less colour correcting for us to do and the two different cameras gave us very different coloured shots.  Sound: We also chose to use two clip mics, one for the presenter and one for John, the farmer we were interviewing so that their sound levels matched as we found putting together the sound from the clip mic and the same from the boom was very different.  Interviews: When we were filming our interviews the second time, we asked our interviewee what we wanted him to say in his answer. Because we'd already filmed the interview we knew what ...

Filming Wildlife • Production

Image
Finding the wildlife was quite a challenge as the wildlife on the farm was in the middle of the woods making it difficult to see the birds in the trees.  We had to stand around and wait for quite a while to try and find them and we had to keep very quiet.  When we did find some wildlife it was quite difficult to keep the camera on the bird because it was so zoomed in it was difficult to keep them in shot.

Editing With Tim Bentham • Workshops

Image
On Wednesday, we had an editing workshop with Tim Bentham.  He is an editor who has worked on many programmes for all the UK's major channels and some internationally.  Sync Assembly: We first had to make a sync assembly where we cut together the different interview clips that we were going to use. In the interview, there were lots of parts that weren't needed so we had to cut down the interviews, joining together different sections so that it made sense. These sections were highlight for us on the transcript of the interview.  Transcripts: Having the time coded transcript was really helpful because it made it really easy to see exactly what was said in the interview, making the editing process simple in terms of picking out the information we wanted from the transcript. The time codes helped when looking for the specific parts as it was easy to search for the different sections in premiere.  Cutaways and Jump Cuts: After cutting the interv...

Transcripts • Production

Writing Transcripts: After filming our interviews, we immediately started to edited together so we had a rough idea of what the interviews would look like. We found this really difficult because we hadn't yet written the transcripts for the interviews. We split our interviews between the three of us so we each had a different one to write out. Using the Transcripts: They were really useful when it came to choosing the pieces of information we wanted to keep in the documentary and which parts we could get rid off. We had some really long interview clips and we didn't need all of the things they were saying, it was easy to choose the information that related to the section we were working on.

Filming - Day 1 • Production

Image
Filming: To film we used a Sony EX, we knew that we wanted to use a clip mic and a boom so this made it easy for us to connect them to compared to if we used a Canon 7D.  We decided that I would film our interviews as I was the one who filmed the interviews in our sequencing workshop. We all filmed the rest of the documentary such as the GV's, wildlife and the actuality.   Locations: From our previous location recce, we knew where we wanted to film the different parts of the documentary and were we wanted the interviews to take place. We chose to split our interview into different sections so that we could have them moving around the farm and going on a journey.  Our first location where we filmed our introduction was in front of the farm shop, this was a location we had to be careful of because of cars coming in and the public walking in and out of the shop.  We filmed our interviews in different fields, where we were able to gets lot of act...

Risk Assessments and Consent Forms for Faversham • Workshops

Filming on Location in Faversham • Workshops

Image
Filming:  Filming in the market was more difficult than filming down at the creek because we had to be more aware of the public and our surroundings. We made sure to get lots of close up shots of people in the market, avoiding faces so that we could use the footage without them all having to sign a consent form. We did have to ask a few people to sign a consent form, for example of a guitar player who was playing in the market place and a hotel owner who allowed us to interview him about the hotel. At the Creek, there were a few ducks and geese on the water. We decided to get some shots of them as practice for when filming the wildlife for our documentaries. We were also able to get lots of good landscape shots there and we tried lots of different shots such as shooting through trees and pulling the focus between the tree and the water.  Editing: Editing the video with having decided on a narrative was quite hard but by putting all the market clips together, the b...

Script • Pre-Production

Image
First Draft: The first draft of our script was mainly for us to plan out what questions we wanted out presenter to ask in our interview and what commentary we wanted. Not only did it help with the dialogue but it helped us in writing our shot list as we made sure that our pictures matched with what we were saying. We wrote most of the script as a group and then Sammi finished off the ending although we have all had an equal input in what the commentary and the questions should be.  Final Script: Our final version of the script is quite different to the original as it has gone through many changes. After we finished our final edit of the video we went through our script and made sure that it matched with the video. Sammi also added in the time codes to the script so that each section is easy to find.

Shot List • Pre-Production

Image
For our first shoot day, we had a shot list which gave us basic idea of the shots we needed to get from our interviews and the GV's of the location.  When it came to actually filmed we focused more on the interview side of filming and made sure that we had those done before we looked at the other shots we had planned to film. I think we should have referred more to the shot list on the day it would have given us more directed on what we needed to make sure we filmed.  When we knew that we would have to re-film wrote another shot list which was much more detailed as we knew exactly what shots we needed this time. We were also able to include what sounds and dialogue we wanted as we knew what we needed the presenter to say again and re-record.

Broadditch Farm // Southfleet Our main location is Broadditch Farm, located in Southfleet in Northwest Kent. There are lots of different areas of the 500 acre farm that we are planning on filming in and on our visit to the farm, we looked at exactly where we could set up the equipment and discussed what kind of shots we could get.  Broadditch Farm We are planning to film on the actual farm where part of our interview will take place and where we will the most of the wildlife.  Broadditch Farm There is also the farm shop which is another important part of the farm, we have talked about using the farms shop sign to introduce and establish the location.  Broadditch Farm Shop Ashtree Farm // West Malling We are filming part of our documentary in Ashtree Farm. This where they provide the public with a safe and controlled environment to ride quad bikes. We are filming here to get some good shots of the quad bikes and to help show the d...

Writing a Treatment • Pre-Production

Alongside making the powerpoint for our pitch, we also wrote a treatment. This helped us in making sure that we had a solid idea that we had done all the research needed. It helped us plan what kind of documentary we wanted ours to be and the different information we wanted to include in it.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nurturing Nature – Treatment The title of this documentary is Nurturing Nature. It is set in Broadditch Farm in Southfleet, Kent. 500 acres of rambling arable farmland in close proximity to urban towns such as Gravesend and Istead Rise. Our documentary will show the main character explaining his situation and predicaments with us and a voice over or commentary to help put across his passion for wildlife protection. John Harris is a 6 th generation farmer, who takes great pride in his farm which is a family run business alongside his brother Mark. T...
