PRE-PRODUCTION • Title Sequence: Drawing Characters | Development
To draw the characters for the title sequence, I chose to use adobe Illustrator. I used this software when drawing the characters for a previous animation for the Fiction Adaptation unit and I found that this worked well for drawing characters.
I first looked at examples of animations also drawn in Illustrator to get some inspiration or some of the things I could possibly do. I also went through the character profiles for Annie and Dean to see what they were supposed to look like because at this point, we don't have our cast yet.
The characters went through many different developments to get them to the point where I felt like the truly represented Annie and Dean.
I began by drawing the character Annie, as a basis for me to work from. I made lots of different versions and then asked from the rest of the groups opinion. We agreed that the first looked to young for Annie who is supposed to be a 65 year old.
From this I then changed her hair colour in an attempt to make her look older. I also created Dean and gave him a grey hairstyle as well. This went too far in the other direction and made them look too old, much older than we wanted then to be.
After again changing hair colours, adding accessories and more detailed facial features, we finally had our two characters. Due to the fact that we haven't cast Annie and Dean yet, these will appear as concept characters in that they we'll be used in the meantime and after the casting process, the title sequence will be re-done so that the animated characters look like the actors we have cast.
For these characters, I have kept with our colour palette for their clothing and have tried to keep their personalities coming across. For example, Dean wearing his 70's disco outfit to show that he's not quite up to date with fashion styles of today and Annie wearing her dress and pearls to show that she's trying to look fashionable on the red carpet and appear young.
There will be more developments to these characters throughout making the title sequence so that in the end they represent Annie and Dean the way we see them.
