A television game show involves contestants answering questions or solving puzzles in order to win a prize. 1930s - 1950s The first game show to air was "Spelling Bee" broadcast live in 1938. As the title suggests, the show was essentially a spelling bee where contestants would have to simply spell a series of words chosen for them. In the 1950s, television became more accessible and popular and game shows were in high demand. 1960s - 1970s This time period saw a decline of game shows in the United States, however in the UK, they remained a fixed part of our television scheduling. The show 'Jeopardy!' was first aired in 1964 and ran until 1975, it was a popular US show where the contestants were given general knowledge clues that were answers to a question, the contestants then had to phrase the question their clues were answering.
