Canon 7D Workshop

Today we looked at the Canon 7D cameras. We looked at how to use the cameras, the different settings we can use and how they compared to the Sony EX cameras. Using a DSLR camera takes some time to set up so are best for slower shoots where you have the time to change the settings and try out different looks. However if you needed to film something quickly and didn't have much time, then using a Sony is good because you can easily set up the camera. Using a DSLR is still good because you can put the camera into auto settings and it can focus and light balance for you, however it might not be the look you want.

We also looked at sound and how you would record audio if you were using a Canon to film with. The camera does have a build in microphone but it's very small so we would either have to attach a rode microphone to the camera which is mounted at the top. This can be difficult when filming because if you're want a wide shot of two characters talking then you wouldn't hear the dialogue very clearly because the microphone would be too far away to pick up the sound. Another way of recording sound with a Canon is used a shotgun mic or a connecting a boom to en external recording device and then syncing up the sound in the post production stage.

Our task for this workshop was to create a short music video to get to grips with the camera. We decided to recreate Hello by Adele because there are lots of different types of shots in the video that we could do, this allowed us to use lots of different settings on the camera. We used different locations to see how the camera worked filming inside and outside for which it worked well with both.

This workshop helped me to get to grips with using the DSLR and I think that I would prefer to use them rather than the Sony EX cameras. For my self portrait, I want to use the DSLR because I'm filming on location and think it would be easier and then for my drama, I will use the Sony.
